The Tompkins HS Symphony Orchestra is comprised of students from both the band and the orchestra program. Currently, the group combines members of the varsity band (Tompkins Wind Symphony) and the top two string orchestras (Tompkins Sinfonia & Sinfonietta). While the varsity orchestra and band periods meet at the same time each day most of the work is done outside of the school day through Monday afternoon rehearsals and sectionals throughout the week. The band program is split into four separate bands that meet throughout the school day. The orchestras at Tompkins are split into six separate orchestra grouped by ability and age. Auditions for all these groups takes place at the end of the previous school year. Since 2013, the Tompkins band and orchestra programs have established a reputation for success & excellence that has made a big impact on its community. Both programs continue to earn UIL Sweepstakes ratings consistently each year separate from one another and together as the Tompkins Symphony. Musical pit orchestras were named Overall Outstanding Orchestra in 2016 and again in 2022 for their work on productions of Into the Wood & Seussical the Musical. The Tompkins Wind Symphony advanced to the Area TMEA Honor Band contest during the summer of 2018 and was a TMEA Honor Band State finalist in 2022. The Tompkins Band earned a spot in the UIL State Marching Contest in 2015, 2020 and 2023. The Tompkins Sinfonia orchestra was named the 2018 & 2023 TMEA Honor Orchestra performing at both TMEA Conventions in those years.
